Reflection

A historical study of the Adventist awakening of the 19th century and the subsequent rise, growth, and worldwide expansion of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Special attention is given to the role of Ellen G. White in the growing church. 

Objective

  1. Knowledge of the historical context in which Adventism developed. 
  1. Understanding the development of prophetic interpretation. 
  1. Awareness of the formative role of the Millerite Movement and the Great Disappointment out of which Sabbatarian Adventism arose. 
  1. Knowledge about how Seventh-day Adventist beliefs and lifestyle practices developed. 
  1. Appreciation for the prophetic life, ministry, and role of Ellen G. White in our Adventist past. 
  1. Knowledge about challenges and shortcomings. This class is not an exercise in hagiography, not it seek to denigrate those who have made mistakes, but it does seek to respectfully better understand various heresy and personnel problems the denomination has faced in a constructive manner. 
  1. Recognize the central role of the Bible in all aspects of the development of Seventh-day Adventism. 
  1. Demonstrate personal application and lessons learned from Adventist history for his or her personal life.
