Reflection
A study of practical applications of conflict and dispute resolution. The course
focuses on developing practical problem-solving and decision-making skills
while exploring issues of self-awareness, identity, culture, power, race, gender,
violence, and forgiveness. Workplace disputes are explored and addressed
from a perspective emphasizing preventive models. Personal and marital
conflicts will be addressed.
Objective
- Students will be able to describe, evaluate, and discuss a variety of theoretical approaches to conflict.
- Students will understand themselves better, how they respond to conflicts, how they learned to do so, and how their behaviors affect others.
- Students will understand how differences in personalities, gender roles, and cultural expectations contribute to conflict.
- Students will learn ways to identify, prevent, and deal with conflict.
- Students will understand and use effective communication skills to enable them to listen, read body language, assert, persuade, and argue constructively.
- Students will learn to maintain objectivity and to be skilled at negotiating and mediating conflict.
